APPLICATIONS:

A major use is as a builder which enhances and maintains the cleaning efficiency of the surfactant, principally by inactivating water hardness in soaps and detergents. Used in making high efficiency detergents and metal cleaners. As a substitute for STPP, it can increase cleaning efficiency and reduce environment pollution, it provides excellent alkaline buffering, corrosion prevention for metal (i.e. Zinc, Aluminum), and aids in the of softening water. Used to improve washing detergents and metal cleaners.

It is also used extensively as an anti-corrosion agent in boiler feed-water.

Sodium metasilicate is used in fireproofing mixtures; in laundry, dairy, metal, and floor cleaning; in deinking paper; in washing carbonated drink bottles; in insecticides, fungicides, and antimicrobial compounds; as a chemical intermediate for silica gel catalysts; as an ingredient in adhesives; as a bleaching aid to stabilise hydrogen peroxide; as a clay deflocculant in the cermics industry, and as a boiler compound. Uses:

• Many potassium salts are prepared by neutralization reactions involving KOH. The potassium salts of carbonate, cyanide, permanganate, phosphate, and various silicates are prepared by treating either the oxides or the acids with KOH. The high solubility of potassium phosphate is desirable in fertilizers.
• The saponification of fats with KOH is used to prepare the corresponding "potassium soaps," which are softer than the more common sodium hydroxide-derived soaps. Because of their softness and greater solubility, potassium soaps require less water to liquefy, and can thus contain more cleaning agent than liquefied sodium soaps.
• Potassium hydroxide is also used in petroleum and natural gas refining for removal of organic acids and sulfur compounds.

Ammonium carbonate (NH4)2CO3, is an unstable inorganic salt, melting at 43c. Commercial “ammonium carbonate” is partly, or entirely, composed of an ammonium bicarbonate / ammonium carbamate mixture, NH4HCO3 / NH2CO2NH4.

It is a white solid, which tends to give off fumes of ammonia in air. It is readily soluble in water, but decomposes in hot water. It is also known as “baker’s ammonia”, since it is sometimes used in baking. An older name is hartshorn salt, since it was originally made from deer antlers. The ground antlers were heated, and gave rise to a crude product.

Ammonium carbonate should be stored in sealed containers. If left in the open it will gradually lose ammonia.

Uses:
Ammonium carbonate may be used as a leavening agent. It also serves as an acidity regulator and has the E number E503. It can be substituted with baking powder, but this may effect both the taste and texture of the finished product.

Ammonium carbonate is the main component of smelling salts. Smelling salts are used to relieve the symptoms of a blocked nose in those suffering from colds. Also used in cough syrup as an active ingredient intended to help relieve symptoms of bronchitis. It is also used as an emetic. It is also found in smokeless tobacco products.
Ammonium carbonate can be used as blowing agents in the production of various types of foam rubber. Gases can be released by heating or adding acid. Ammonium carbonate was one of the earliest blowing agents used with polymers.
It can be used to aid textile dyeing, for example the dyeing of cellulose-based fibers.
